This is how you can invest and travel

Dec 05, 2019

As planned, we’ve spent quite a bit of time away from Noosa and over in Europe this year.

We’ve now been to more than 40 countries in our lifetimes, and we’re looking to add a couple of new countries to the growing list over the coming 6 months.

Thankfully, it’s become much easier to travel, invest, and actively manage your money remotely these days.

From a property portfolio perspective, quality over quantity tends to be an effective mantra (i.e. it’s about how much equity, not how many properties), and if you have a great property manager then this needn’t take up more than a small amount of your time each month.

Stock market investing has also become remarkably more accessible and affordable over time.

You can invest all over the world from your iPad or iPhone, you can invest in different currencies, and if you want to you can do so on a hedged basis too.

Running a business remotely has also become far more achievable than it once was, thanks to the powerful reach and influence of the internet.

Global travel, if it’s something you’re interested in, is also now relatively easy to research and execute once you have your financial world in order.

That means building a portfolio of long-term and legacy investments (well 3), a portfolio of liquid investments and cash that you can actively manage to cover the 2-5 year time horizon (well 2), and a cash buffer to cover the next 12 months of living expenses and other costs (well 1).

Not everything gets easier as you get older from a travelling perspective, we’ve found.

You need to be more safety conscious once you have offspring, for example, and these days we don’t eat meat or dairy, which can be ‘challenging’ in some locations!

On the other hand, travel is often a much more pleasurable experience now we don’t always have to fly economy and can afford 5-star hotels, whatever anyone might say.

Of course, you might not be interested in travel.

Your thing might be driving luxury cars, or ballroom dancing, or yachting, or seeking out the world’s best surf beaches…or whatever.

The point is really about choice, and not being unduly constrained by time, money, or geography.

I discussed this a little further in the short video here

Next stop, Asia!
