This is how to manage your time better

Under the pump

If you’ve ever felt that there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything that you need to, take heart…you’re far from alone!

It’s said that the average person has about 300 hours worth of ‘stuff’ on their to-do list, from sorting out admin, to books that they’re supposed to read, or holidays they’re meant to be planning, and whatever else.

This perennial problem is not going to be solved by you working harder.

Instead, it’s more important that you work out what you are not going to do.

That’s how your time management pressures can be resolved.

How you can best tackle the challenge may depend upon your personality type.

Different strokes

If you are the type 3 or ‘achiever’ personality, then your diary is most likely filled to the brim with meetings and action points, and you may be well served by taking some downtime to think, and to consider carefully where you can do less or delegate.

Type 5s or ‘thinker/analysers’ like me tend to be more introverted, and we’re prone to spending too much time on what we enjoy doing or we know we’re good at, rather than thinking ‘what is the one thing I can do that will make the most difference to what I achieve today?’.

As frequently detail-oriented people, we need to get back to the Pareto Principle or 80/20 thinking.

Most of what we do achieves very little; and similarly most of what we achieve is derived from just a handful of key actions.

We should instead try to think:

‘If I could only work one day this week, what would I do, and how would I do it?

Or how about if I only had 4 hours this week? Or just 1 hour?’.

Finally, the type 7 personality or ‘adventurer’ loves to brainstorm new ideas, but typically isn’t so good at finishing them off!

So before taking any on any new tasks, type 7s need to channel their inner Magnus Magnusson and say to themselves: ‘I’ve started so I’ll finish!’.

I discussed this a little further in the short video here
