Well, hasn’t 2020 been a challenging year?
I had a lofty new year’s resolution of learning Italian and travelling to Italy, so you can imagine how well that went (or, more accurately, did not go).
I haven’t been to the office for months, which has saved plenty of travel time, but coffee meetings have been seamlessly replaced by online Zoom and Skype meetings…and how!
Saving time
Here are two ways, then, to work more efficiently during COVID-19.
Firstly, insist on an agenda and a time-limit for every online meeting.
Secondly, consider batching.
We all intuitively know about the concept of batching.
After all, you don’t wash each pair of socks every time you change them.
Instead, you wait until there’s enough washing piled up to make performing the task worthwhile.
But somehow this simple idea can get all too easily lost in the era of endless electronic communication.
The batching of similar tasks can help you to move into a state of flow, maximising performance, and ultimately make you far more productive.
Scheduling a time for reading and sending emails is one obvious example, but you can apply the batching concept to social media activity, phone calls, cooking, leisure activities, running errands in town, and much more.
