Our 4Fs framework: this is why you should start with FUN

The F of the 4 Fs

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s sidekick, often talks about models.

Mental models to be exact.

What he says is that it’s important to look at things and develop a model, as a way of guiding you in your decision making.

What are the 4 Fs?

As with our 8 timeless principles for investing, we’ve developed what we call the 4 Fs framework for life.

It’s not all about the usual ‘exercise, read books, meditate, get sleep…’ etc. (although of course these may be important!).

The reason why is because some folks don’t like exercise or reading or meditating.

Like investing, we each have a personal style, and this is why we don’t recommend a predetermined set of activities.

When we coach, teach, and mentor folks, we understand that most are interested in making money.

However, we each have an individual approach.

And while we might like money because it gives us freedom or the means and ability to travel, you might like it to demonstrate your achievements, to give wealth away to help others, or as a way to command loyalty, or to protect you from future adversity.

Ultimately we all want money so that we can express our beliefs and lead the life we want, whatever that ‘want’ might be.

What you can do immediately is find out what makes you hum or puts a spring in your step.

This process alone may help to inform your business, saving, and investment strategies, by allowing you to consider the simple question: ‘How much is enough’?

Here we make an initial suggestion using our 4 Fs framework to find out what you might like to do when you have the option of choosing to work or not.

The transition

If you find yourself in the enviable position of having enough money to contemplate ‘retirement’ you should take up another job – the job of living life to the full…whatever that may entail for you.

Often you’ll find it’s not a busy, hectic, heavily scheduled life, but one where you can mostly float with the time, allowing the waves to set the general direction, although in amongst the ebbs and flows you still have an overall direction.

Let the winds be your servant, not your master.

I discussed this a little further in the short video here
