20-video series #8: Ditch the Jeremiahs: choose mentors wisely and mix in energising circles for serendipitous events

coaching goal setting mentoring mindset Dec 23, 2022

Welcome to my new 20-video series, on the 20 Next Level Wealth steps to designing and then living your dream life.

The dramatic landscape changes over the past few years have created a unique opportunity for you to design and live your dream lifestyle.

In this 20-video series, which I filmed while travelling around Europe, I've aimed to articulate everything important that I've learned about personal finance, business, wealth, and designing an ideal lifestyle...into just 20 short blog posts!

Sum of the parts

It is often said that we become the average of the half dozen or so people we spend the most time with.

I believe there is much truth in this.

Even if it’s unconscious, we naturally tend to mirror the behaviour and actions of the people immediately around us.

It stands to reason, therefore, that mixing with like-minded, positive, and successful people will improve your networks, and will help to reset your financial thermostat to a higher level.

A good goal for this year is to upgrade the people you spend the most time with to include people you admire and have achieved what you want to.

Choose your mentors wisely

The other side of the equation is that you need to be careful to whom you listen.

From teachers to mainstream media, well-meaning relatives, or mates down at the pub…there are always going to be stories about doom and gloom around.

At various points in the cycle, the stories may have some merit.

Fair enough.

But I can’t think of a single time that reading mainstream media has been useful for my investing journey, improving my financial situation, or for building a business.

Furthermore, there will always be people on hand to tell you why your plans are a bad idea.

The words might differ, but the general theme tends to go something along the lines of “well, if it doesn’t work out, then it might fail,” or similarly useless sentiments to that effect.

This is both a truism and worthless advice.

Avoid these people where you can!

Media reporting

Reading the financial press can be interesting from an educational perspective, but it’s rarely useful for helping you to find an edge.

By the time you read about a trend in the newspaper, almost by definition it is yesterday’s news.

And in any case, media is about advertising and clicks these days, so perversely outlets are incentivised to make bold predictions of impending gloom or make sabre-ratting claims about the evils of greedy capitalists (ironically to boost their own profits).

Mixing in the right circles

Choose your mentors and who you listen to wisely.

A good place to start is to network with people who have achieved what you want to achieve, and to learn from them.

It doesn’t mean you have to ditch negative people from your life entirely.

But you do need to recognise that they will not help you in any way to achieve your goals, and in most cases, they will simply hold you back.

I discussed this a little further in the short video here.
