FU money
There’s a lot of discussion about what the best assets are to own.
A great home to live in, residential and commercial properties generating a strong cashflow, and a substantial investment in stock market indexes, for example.
These are all great investments, and perhaps you should aim to have a portfolio which incorporates them all.
But the number one asset to be in possession of is…freedom.
Autonomy leads to happiness
That’s not just my opinion.
Studies show that people are happiest when they have a sense of autonomy over their own lives.
Autonomy has a huge impact of your own sense of wellbeing.
It builds a sense of meaningfulness, motivation, engagement, and a positive mental attitude.
It doesn’t mean there won’t be setbacks, but a feeling of being in control of your own destiny will do wonders for your level of happiness.
War chest
The best way to get that is to build up a buffer or war chest of funds.
That way you can choose what work you want to do, who you want to do it with, and when.
Coarser people than me refer to it as ‘FU money’.
But whatever you choose to call it, the concept is an important one.
More opportunities arise
Once you have a greater sense of control over your destiny and choices, you will find that the balance of power in negotiation and discussions is permanently tilted in your favour.
You’ll be able to walk away from any job offer or business deal with no stress, because you won’t be in any way reliant upon it.
As a result, you’ll find that magically enough, better deals and offers come your way.
The Universe has a strange way of making opportunities available to those who are available and open to them.
Build a war chest of ‘FU money’ and then you’ll be in a stronger position to take on projects and investments with limited downside and unlimited upside.
